Mergers and Technology Complicate Cross-card Acceptance
Business Issue As companies merge with different technology bases, executing Marketing strategies becomes more challenging. With 3 mergers occurring in early 2002, a major petroleum company found themselves in the dilemma of having a huge proprietary card portfolio which could not be used across all their 14,000+ retail locations. Along with 15 different point of sale (POS) devices and 2 transaction processors, there were 21 permutations of POS software across their brands. A major effort was initiated to consolidate POS software, hardware, and transaction processors. W. Capra’s Role 1. Develop a rollout strategy and detailed deployment plan. By working with multiple POS vendors, W. Capra determined feasible approaches and plans. 2. Develop deployment processes. This included step-by-step install scripts, a beta test programs to learn and modify, and building a “go-live” team. 3. Provide day-to-day project management. Execute the agreed processes, including maintaining schedules, directing resources, tracking costs, and reporting progress and issues to management. Outcome W. Capra executed a successful rollout to all retail locations in 15 months that allowed cross-card acceptance and a foundation for future Marketing programs by having a simpler POS/transaction processing topology.
